Apple Blossom Time

I love tree blossoms in the spring. Flowering plumb blossoms, cherry blossoms, and apple blossoms. I love an early morning walk with the smell of freshly cut grass and the sweet scent of tree blossoms in the air. Nothing announces that spring has arrived quite like the tree blossoms do.

Scott and I are always on the lookout for parks and public spaces with great blossoms. We have several parks where spring blooms are on display. There’s always something blooming at Point Defiance or Wright Parks. Wapato Hill Park has a basketball court surrounded by blooming trees. But my favorite is the Curran Apple Orchard.

The Curran Apple Orchard was once a private orchard in University Place but is now a community park. It’s in the summer.  Individuals and families can adapt a tree to care for in the spring and summer and then harvest the apples in the filled with older apple trees, a few benches, and a small, covered stage that hosts musical events fall. If there are any trees that haven’t been adapted, their apples are free for the community to harvest.

Towards the end of April is apple blossom time and the trees are loaded with blooms. Being a community park, visitors are welcome to come in and enjoy. We have gone there for picnics, spring portraits, or to simply enjoy walking amongst the blossoms. I always bring my camera and always end up with lots of pictures.

We usually end up making several trips to the park since the bloom time varies from year to year. And some years there are more blooms than other years. It’s a great way to spend an evening.

One of these days we’ll get over to Washington’s apple country at the right time to see some real orchards in bloom. Last time we were in Wenatchee in the spring we were too late and there weren’t many blooms left. I guess we’ll just have to go back again.

Until then we’ll just enjoy the neighborhood orchard.
